Tobacco Use Prevention

Smoking is the single greatest avoidable cause of disease and death. Because it is such a major health issue, the Vilas County Tobacco Free Coalition was formed under the auspices of the Vilas County Public Health Department. It is funded from the tobacco lawsuit settlement and monitored by the Department of Health. The Coalition's first meeting was held in Eagle River on January 9, 2001. Since then, the Coalition has been very active.

The activities of the Coalition include
:

  • Conduct epidemiological studies.
  • Promote the Quit Line.
  • Develop media relations.
  • Educate the public about clean indoor air.
  • Youth education and advocacy.
  • Coordinate with the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI)
  • Implement a comprehensive policy addressing tobacco use among a disparate population.
  • Work at the state and local level in anti-tobacco advocacy initiatives.
  • Interact with local and state leaders to keep them informed about our anti-tobacco advocacy efforts and our needs.

Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line

quitlinelogoThe Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line offers a single access point to tobacco addiction treatment. The Quit Line, managed by the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI), offers a variety of services, including:

  • One-on-one practical telephone counseling. Quit Line tobacco addiction treatment specialists provide specific strategies on quitting for good.
  • Free Information. For friends, family and tobacco users, the Quit Line provides information on tobacco use, dependence and addiction treatment. Friends and family members can get information on how to help someone they know quit using tobacco.
  • Referrals to local tobacco addiction treatment programs and services. Quit Line tobacco addiction treatment specialists have a list of resources from all over Wisconsin so they can refer callers to established programs within their own area.

For more information, visit the Quit Line (exit DHFS) web site or contact Kate Kobinsky, UW-CTRI Quit Line Coordinator, at 608-265-5617.

Tobacco Addiction Treatment Education and Outreach Program

The statewide education and outreach program provides Wisconsin residents and clinicians with access to state-of-the art, effective smoking addiction treatment strategies. In doing so, the statewide Education and Outreach program blends medical treatment with public health approaches to treating tobacco addiction. The University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI) has six outreach specialists across the State to support the tobacco addiction treatment needs of the entire State. Regional specialists also aid in the coordination of statewide, comprehensive tobacco addiction treatment efforts and contribute to the success of community-based tobacco control activities.
For more information, visit the Education and Outreach web site or contact Rob Adsit, UW-CTRI Education and Outreach Coordinator, at 608-262-7557.
