D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
is a collaborative effort between your school, children, and parents. The D.A.R.E. program is introduced to our children in 5th grade. The Vilas County Sheriff's Department specially trained officers teach D.A.R.E. at: Phelps Elementary, Eagle River Elementary, Land O' Lakes Elementary, St. Germain Elementary, Arbor Vitae Woodruff Elementary, and North Lakeland Elementary schools.
The Elementary D.A.R.E. Curriculum is committed to teaching and practicing a drug free message. This is promoted by aligning and imbedding the national health education standards through content and learning opportunities that are developmentally appropriate for fifth grade students.
The D.A.R.E. program has recently changed to accommodate the research and theories associated with successful prevention programs. The program provides health, social, and legal risks in using tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, inhalants, and other drugs as well as the skills in recognizing and resisting the peer pressure associated in experimenting.
Our D.A.R.E. officers would like to stress the importance of positively re-enforcing the values and ideals of the D.A.R.E. program at home. The D.A.R.E. program actively has the students engage in problem-solving, in-depth discussions, critical thinking, and role-playing with others.
